Google’s AI Mode: A Double-Edged Sword for Search and the Web

Google's push into AI-powered search is reshaping the online landscape, but not without raising serious questions about the future of the web. With the rollout of AI Mode, Google aims to provide users with quicker, more comprehensive answers, but this ambition comes at a cost. Is it innovation, or is Google burying the web alive?

Brian X. Chen of The New York Times recently tested Google's AI Mode against traditional Google searches, finding a mixed bag of results. While AI Mode excels at tasks like product research, generating handy charts comparing features and prices of items like car seats, it falters when it comes to basic web searches, such as finding local businesses with specific amenities. Chen noted, "AI Mode could prove to be a nifty tool for more tedious tasks like product research for online shopping... Just always check the answers."

AI Mode excels at tasks like product research for online shopping. But it falls short on basic web searches.

The real concern, as highlighted by John Herrman at Intelligencer, is that AI Mode, along with AI Overviews, is demoting and even burying links to websites. Instead of directing users to original sources, Google's AI provides summaries and answers directly within its platform. This has major implications for publishers and content creators who rely on Google search for traffic and revenue. Herrman argues, "In its drive to embrace AI, Google is further concealing the raw material that fuels it, demoting links as it continues to ingest them for abstraction."

Digiday's analysis of the winners and losers in Google's AI Mode paints a stark picture. Google itself emerges as a clear winner, poised to monetize AI Mode with targeted ads and gain a competitive edge over standalone AI platforms. Advertisers, particularly in high-consideration categories, may also benefit from the more contextually relevant ads in AI Mode.

However, publishers, especially news, product review, and recipe sites, are facing a bleak future. Google's move to provide information directly on the search results page means fewer click-throughs, fewer impressions, and less digital ad revenue. Danielle Coffey, president and CEO of the News/Media Alliance, lamented, "The blue links were the last vestige of hope that we had for any sort of revenue."

Moreover, Google's lack of transparency regarding click-through rates from AI Mode and AI Overviews leaves publishers in the dark, making it difficult to assess the true impact on their traffic. This has led some SEO consultancies to pivot their businesses, recognizing that traditional SEO practices are becoming increasingly irrelevant in an AI-dominated search landscape.

Google's Sundar Pichai stated that users’ queries in AI Mode were two to three times the length of traditional searches. But even if users find longer search functions convenient, at what cost does this convenience come? Will the web as we know it transform into a wasteland of information farms?

AI Mode represents a paradigm shift in how we interact with information online. While it offers potential benefits in terms of efficiency and personalized search experiences, the long-term consequences for the web's ecosystem remain uncertain. Is Google building a better future for search, or is it undermining the very foundation upon which it was built?
