Google’s NotebookLM Leaps Forward with Gemini 2.5 Flash and Multilingual Audio Overviews

Google's NotebookLM, the AI-powered note-taking and research assistant, is rapidly evolving. The latest developments include an upgrade to the powerful Gemini 2.5 Flash and the expansion of Audio Overviews to over 50 languages. This advancement promises more comprehensive answers and breaks down language barriers for users worldwide.

NotebookLM's move to Gemini 2.5 Flash is a significant upgrade. According to Google, this new model boasts enhanced “thinking capabilities,” especially when tackling complex, multi-step reasoning questions. This upgrade will allow NotebookLM users to receive more insightful and detailed answers, making it an even more valuable tool for research and knowledge synthesis.

The expansion of Audio Overviews is another major step forward. Initially launched last year, this feature allows users to generate engaging, podcast-like conversations from their uploaded documents. Thanks to Gemini's native audio support, this functionality now supports over 50 languages, from Afrikaans to Hindi to Turkish. This multilingual capability significantly broadens NotebookLM's accessibility and utility, especially for users working with diverse source materials.

Google is also introducing a new "Output Language" option, letting users select the language for their Audio Overviews, regardless of their account's preferred language. A teacher preparing a lesson on the Amazon rainforest, can share resources in multiple languages with students being able to listen in to a generated Audio Overview of key insights in their preferred language.

The Gemini 2.5 Flash model is also slated to replace 2.0 Flash as the base model after stablizing and improvements are coming soon before is becomes generally available.

The consistent updates and improvements made to NotebookLM highlight Google's commitment to AI-powered productivity tools. Combining the power of Gemini 2.5 Flash with the accessibility of multilingual Audio Overviews, NotebookLM is quickly becoming a must-have tool for anyone looking to streamline their research and note-taking process.
