Huawei MateBook Fold: A Glimpse into the Future of Foldable Devices and a Potential iPad Fold Competitor
The tech world is abuzz with foldable devices, and Huawei's MateBook Fold is making waves by offering an early look at what a foldable iPad might resemble. While rumors of an Apple iPad Fold have been circulating for years, Huawei’s new offering provides tangible insight into the potential form factor and functionality of such a device.
Reports also suggest that Amazon is developing a similar device, potentially hitting the market even before Apple. This increasing competition signals a growing interest in foldable technology and its potential to reshape the tablet and laptop landscape.

Folding iPad Rumors: For years, whispers of a folding iPad have persisted, with the predicted release date consistently pushed back. Speculation ranges from an 18-20 inch unfolded screen and questions whether the device would be more akin to an iPad or a MacBook. Recent reports suggest an 18.8-inch iPad Fold, mirroring the concept of the iPhone Fold - a standard iPad that unfolds into a larger display. However, a definite launch date remains uncertain.
Huawei’s MateBook Fold Features: The MateBook Fold aligns well with expectations for a foldable iPad. It unfolds to an 18-inch screen and adapts as a pseudo-laptop. Key features include:
- A slim profile: Under 15mm when closed and 7.3mm when unfolded.
- Versatile modes: Flat as a tablet, flat with an external keyboard, laptop-like with virtual screens, or pseudo-laptop with a soft keyboard.
- 13-inch screen equivalency in laptop mode.

While impressive from a design and engineering perspective, the MateBook Fold isn’t cheap. The base model (32GB RAM, 1TB storage) is priced at $3,330, while the 2TB version goes for $3,750. This price tag would be considered steep even for an Apple device.
HarmonyOS and Unique Design Running on Huawei's HarmonyOS, the device offers a unique software experience. The design incorporates impressive engineering, including two fans, a vapor cooling system, and six speakers within its aluminum body. The hinge is designed to hold the screen open at various angles, showcasing meticulous attention to detail.
Amazon Enters the Foldable Fray: According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Amazon is also developing a similar foldable device. The potential entry of Amazon further validates the foldable market and intensifies competition. Kuo estimates mass production for Amazon's device in late 2026 or 2027, while Apple's rumored 18.8-inch foldable is slated for late 2027 or 2028.
The Huawei MateBook Fold is expensive and runs Huawei's own OS. However, it serves as a valuable preview of what we can expect from the iPad Fold, including the ability to use it as a large tablet or PC with a physical keyboard, or in laptop mode. It also gives us an idea of the potential sizing.
The MateBook Fold's launch also marks Huawei's move to using its home-grown Harmony operating system in its laptops, challenging the dominance of Microsoft and Apple in this space. This ambitious step reflects China's push to develop its own technology in the face of U.S. restrictions.
