Huawei’s Smartwatch Lineup Expands with Fit 4 & Fit 4 Pro: A Cycling Companion?

Huawei is making waves in the smartwatch market with the introduction of the Fit 4 and Fit 4 Pro, aiming to challenge established brands like Garmin and Apple. Priced competitively, starting at £149.99/€169.99, these smartwatches boast features catering to a wide range of users, especially cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. Is the Huawei Fit 4 Pro the only ride recorder cyclists need?

The Huawei Fit 4 series steps up from its predecessor, the Fit 3, with enhanced features. Offline maps access, a new barometer for altitude tracking, and comprehensive health-monitoring data are among the key upgrades. Aimed at mountain climbers, the barometer's benefits could also apply to cyclists with elevation-gain data.

Huawei emphasizes the use of premium materials like sapphire glass and aviation-grade aluminum in the Fit 4 Pro, promising improved durability. The device is also notably thin, at just 9.3mm, and includes water resistance up to 40 meters for diving.

Offline maps access and new watersports route-tracking features are significant additions. Access to over 15,000 global golf course maps could attract golf enthusiasts. Battery life, crucial for long rides and travel, aims to eliminate the need for daily recharging.

According to TechRadar's Basil Kronfli, both the Watch Fit 4 and Watch Fit 4 Pro pack a lot into Apple Watch–inspired bodies. He noted that each offers up to seven days of battery life with typical use and up to 10 days with lighter use.

The Huawei Watch 5, though not available in the US due to ongoing restrictions, offers a sleek design and handy health tracking tools. The easy access X-Tap sensor allows for quick health readings, including heart rate, ECG, and respiratory health, making it easy for users to monitor their well-being.

The new HRV (heart rate variability) tracking, which analyzes heart rhythms, is another notable feature. It analyses your respiratory health by having you cough three times into the microphone while others features include GPS tracking, eSIM functionality to make calls without a phone and sleep tracking, along with "contextual recommendations to help users understand and improve their lifestyle."

The Huawei Health app, available on Android and iOS, further enhances the user experience, making it easier to switch between devices and track fitness data.

Will the Huawei Fit 4 and Fit 4 Pro disrupt the smartwatch market? With a focus on durability, advanced features, and competitive pricing, these devices aim to be more than just fitness trackers. Their performance on long rides and the accuracy of their health-tracking features will ultimately determine their success.
