India Fast-Tracks Spy Satellite Program Amidst Border Tensions, Aims for 2026 Launch

In a move signaling heightened vigilance and a commitment to national security, India is significantly accelerating its spy satellite program. Aiming for operational readiness by 2026, the government is collaborating with private companies to fast-track the deployment of advanced surveillance technology. This decision follows closely on the heels of Operation Sindoor, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced intelligence gathering.

The ambitious SBS-3 program, worth approximately Rs 22,500 crore ($3 billion), aims to develop and deploy a constellation of 52 spy satellites. Initially slated for completion in four years, the timeframe has been drastically reduced to just 12-18 months. Three private companies – Anant Technologies, Centum Electronics, and Alpha Design Technologies – are partnering with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to achieve this accelerated timeline.

"It is a necessary move in light of such sensitive geopolitical interactions," an expert told Mint, emphasizing the crucial role the SBS-3 constellation will play in India’s national security infrastructure. The satellites will primarily monitor India’s borders, focusing on activities across the Line of Control, and provide critical support during natural disasters like floods and earthquakes.

Reports indicate the Indian armed forces extensively utilized both domestic and international commercial space assets during Operation Sindoor. ISRO facilitated data acquisition from global operators, supplementing the information gathered from Indian satellites like the Cartosat and Risat families. The Cartosat-2C, known for its high-resolution imagery, proved invaluable for reconnaissance and surveillance.

Among the private companies involved, Anant Technologies, led by former ISRO veteran Subba Rao Pavuluri, is reportedly in advanced stages of developing a satellite that could be ready as early as this year. The launch could potentially utilize ISRO’s heavy rocket, Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3), or even Elon Musk’s SpaceX, depending on mission availability.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is anticipated to provide launch support for the project, with both SpaceX and ISRO rockets being considered for deploying the satellites into their designated orbits. Strict deadlines have been imposed, and the Ministry of Defence must approve all satellite launches.

The accelerated spy satellite program represents a significant leap forward for India’s security apparatus and offers a substantial opportunity for the nation’s private space companies. As these companies ramp up their technological capabilities, India is poised to solidify its position as a major player in the global space sector.
