Instagram on iPad: A Decade-Long Wait Nears Its End

For years, iPad users have clamored for a dedicated Instagram app, enduring a peculiar absence in the Apple ecosystem. Now, that wait may finally be coming to an end. Multiple reports suggest that Meta is actively developing and testing an Instagram app for iPads, with a potential release later this year.

The Information's Kaya Yurieff and Kalley Huang initially reported on Meta's efforts back in April. This news was further corroborated by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who stated in his Power On newsletter that Meta employees are "actively testing" the iPad version. Gurman anticipates a release this year, assuming no major roadblocks emerge.

Meta's reluctance to develop an iPad app has long been a source of frustration for users. While a Facebook app for iPads has existed since 2011, other Meta-owned platforms, such as Instagram, were notably absent. This stance appears to be shifting, as evidenced by the recent launch of WhatsApp for iPad. The company seems to be signaling a change in strategy regarding tablet-specific applications.

Johanna 'Jojo the Techie', a mobile technology expert, highlighted that one of the initial hurdles was technical. Instagram's original design, geared towards square images and smaller screens, presented challenges when adapting to the iPad's larger display. Concerns about scaling low-resolution content to a high-resolution tablet were also factors. Improved rendering tools and enhanced device capabilities have now made it easier to address these issues.

The potential arrival of Instagram on iPad is particularly exciting for creators. Photographers, designers, and digital artists often rely on iPads, using them extensively for their workflows. While these users employ Instagram to share their work, they have been limited to the mobile app or web version, which lack full functionality. A dedicated iPad app could finally provide a full-screen layout and editing tools tailored to the larger display.

While Meta has yet to make an official announcement, internal testing is a strong indication that the launch is likely imminent. Could this finally be the year we see Instagram embrace the iPad?
