iPhone 17 Rumor Roundup: Smaller Dynamic Island, Chipset Surprises, and More

The rumor mill is churning with details about the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, and the latest reports suggest some potentially significant changes. From the size of the Dynamic Island to the internal chipset, here's a breakdown of what we're hearing.

One of the most intriguing rumors revolves around the Face ID sensor. According to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is planning to implement a new "metalens" technology across the entire iPhone 17 range. Originally believed to be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, this technology could dramatically reduce the size of the Face ID sensor, resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island for all models. This contradicts earlier reports from Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested the Dynamic Island would remain largely unchanged compared to the iPhone 16.

Apple introduced the Dynamic Island in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Making the metalens addition to reduce the size of the Face ID sensor standard, the entire iPhone 17 range could flaubt a smaller Dynamic Island.

Perhaps the most surprising rumor concerns the chipset. Pu initially predicted that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would feature a version of the A19 chip. However, he has seemingly revised his prediction, now believing that the base model iPhone 17 will use the same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16. The iPhone 17 Air, meanwhile, is expected to feature the A19. It’s expected A19 Pro chip will be in Pro models.

The analyst also adjusts RAM predictions. Only the base model will sport 8GB RAM, along with the older A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Other models are expected to have 12GB RAM.

Industry expert Ross Young suggests the base iPhone 17 will feature a slightly larger 6.3-inch display compared to the 6.1-inch iPhone 16.

Ultimately, the iPhone 17 is shaping up to be an intriguing device with several potential upgrades. While some rumors contradict each other, the overall picture suggests that Apple is aiming to deliver a compelling update to its flagship smartphone. While Apple typically unveils the new iPhone lineup in September, these rumors may change, so we need to treat it with a truckload of salt.
