Is This Goodbye to the iPhone? Apple Exec Says AI Could Make It Obsolete in 10 Years

In a startling admission, Apple's services chief Eddy Cue suggested that **AI advancements** might render the iPhone obsolete within a decade. This revelation came during testimony in the Google vs. DoJ antitrust case, as reported by Bloomberg. Cue boldly stated, "You may not need an iPhone 10 years from now, as crazy as it sounds."

Cue's vision hinges on the rapid evolution of AI and the integration of intuitive AI functionality into wearables. He envisions a future where these devices could replace traditional smartphones. This marks the first time a high-ranking Apple executive has publicly acknowledged the potential demise of the iPhone due to AI.

Referencing Apple embracing new technology shifts, according to his testimony reported by PCMag, Cue reminisced of the decision to obsolete the iPod. He said, "We killed the iPod ourselves with the iPhone," highlighting the company's willingness to disrupt its own products. He emphasized the challenge many companies face in abandoning successful products when new technologies emerge, fearing the loss of their "golden goose."

Despite this long-term speculation, Apple is actively developing new iPhone features. Reports suggest a foldable iPhone could debut next year, followed by an all-display model in 2027, addressing a long-standing dream from former design chief Jony Ive. However, the success of current AI wearables is questionable, with products like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 receiving criticism. Still, Apple is reportedly committed to robotics and augmented Reality smart glasses.

Apple's exploration of AI isn't limited to hardware. Cue revealed that Apple is considering incorporating AI search tools from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity into Safari, potentially disrupting the traditional search engine landscape. This move is crucial given the potential $20 billion annual loss if Apple loses revenue stemming from the Google's payments default search engine.

Meanwhile, iOS 18.5 is on the horizon, promising new features following extensive beta testing. Apple's announcement of the 2025 Pride Collection, including a new Apple Watch band, watch, face, and iPhone wallpaper, further demonstrates the company's commitment to diverse product offerings. iPhone 17 models are expected to bring significant camera upgrades.

The future remains uncertain, but it's clear that AI is poised to reshape the tech landscape. Will Apple successfully navigate this shift and create a compelling AI-powered successor to the iPhone? Or will a new player emerge to claim the throne?
