Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition: A Farewell to the V8 Sports Sedan?
The automotive world is buzzing with news of the Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition, a limited-run model that's stirring up speculation about the future of the IS sedan. Is this the final curtain call for the beloved V8-powered sports sedan?
Lexus is introducing an Ultimate Edition of the IS sedan, capped at just 500 units globally. This special edition, based on the potent IS500 F Sport Performance, arrives with visual enhancements and exclusive badging, fueling rumors of the IS's imminent discontinuation. While Lexus remains tight-lipped about future product plans, the arrival of the 2025 Ultimate Edition strongly suggests there won't be a 2026 IS model in the US.

What makes the Ultimate Edition so special? It boasts a new exterior color called Wind, complemented by matte-black 19-inch BBS wheels and eye-catching red brake calipers. Inside, a two-tone red and black color scheme dominates, complete with red seatbelts and a numbered plaque signifying its place within the exclusive 500-unit series. The scuff-plate trim is also unique to this edition.
Under the hood, the IS500 Ultimate Edition retains the familiar 472-hp 5.0-liter V-8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering power exclusively to the rear wheels. Performance figures remain consistent with the standard IS500, which has been clocked at 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds in previous tests.

Beyond the aesthetics, the Ultimate Edition also receives functional upgrades, including larger 15.0-inch ventilated front brake rotors, red-painted six-piston Brembo brake calipers, and high-friction brake pads. These enhancements contribute to enhanced stopping power and a more engaging driving experience.
Lexus could load the IS500 Ultimate Edition with features to celebrate, such as upgrading the calipers and brake pads, painting the car in an exclusive color, and changing the tire set. All to add exclusivity to the line while preserving what fans love.
The question remains: Is the Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition truly a swan song? With the current-generation IS nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the discontinuation of naturally aspirated V8's it seems likely. We can't help but hope this isn't the end, As Wesley Wren from autoweek.com puts it, "Do you think this Lexus IS 500 is the last of its kind? Tell us your thoughts below."
