Mortal Kombat 1 Support Ends: NetherRealm Shifts Focus to New Project, Leaving Fans Disappointed
In a move that's sure to disappoint many, NetherRealm Studios has officially announced that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive additional DLC characters or story content. While the game will continue to receive balance adjustments and fixes, this signals the end of significant content updates, marking a surprisingly early conclusion to the game's lifecycle. What does this mean for the future of the franchise and what could NetherRealm's next big project be?

The announcement comes after the release of the Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, leading to speculation that the game was nearing its content completion. NetherRealm has confirmed this, stating that the team needs to "shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can." This decision has sparked concern among fans, especially given co-creator Ed Boon's earlier claims that Mortal Kombat 1 would be supported for years to come.
"We are hearing players' requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on," the company stated in a recent announcement.
A Shortened Timeline: Despite initial promises, Mortal Kombat 1 received only around a year and a half of support, mirroring the timeline of Mortal Kombat 11, which also saw its life cut short. This move has fueled rumors that the planned Kombat Pack 3, featuring characters like Cassie Cage, Jade, and Kung Jin, was canceled due to the Khaos Reigns expansion's performance.
While the end of support is disappointing, NetherRealm is giving fans one last gift with the release of Mortal Kombat 2 Movie skins. These skins, coinciding with the upcoming movie release in October 2025, offer a fresh look for characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Johnny Cage, and Shao Kahn.

Each character skin is available for 500 Dragon Krystals and comes in six different colors, allowing players to customize their favorite fighters before they appear on the big screen.
With Mortal Kombat 1 now considered content complete, the focus shifts to NetherRealm's next endeavor. Speculation is rife, with potential candidates including Injustice 3 or a new installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Whatever the future holds, the early end to Mortal Kombat 1's support raises questions about the long-term strategy for the franchise.
