MSI Unveils New Claw Gaming Handhelds at Computex 2025: AMD vs. Intel Showdown
The competition in the handheld gaming market is heating up! MSI has just announced its latest contenders, the MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM and the MSI Claw 8 AI Plus 'Polar Tempest' Edition, at Computex 2025, held in Taipei between 20 and 23 May. These new handhelds represent a significant push to challenge the Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve's Steam Deck, offering gamers more choices and powerful performance on the go.
The MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM, powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme CPU, boasts up to 24GB of LPDDR5 memory, an 8-inch 120Hz display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, and a generous 1TB M.2 SSD. Gamers can choose between a sleek white or a vibrant lime green finish.

Meanwhile, the MSI Claw 8 AI Plus 'Polar Tempest' Edition packs an Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU and an even larger 2TB M.2 SSD. This model sports a unique "glittering" white coating, giving it a premium look and feel. Both handhelds run on Windows 11, providing access to a vast library of games, including popular titles like Fortnite and Dragon Ball Z: FighterZ, which face compatibility issues on SteamOS due to anti-cheat measures.
MSI's decision to offer both AMD and Intel-based options is a strategic move, allowing gamers to choose the platform that best suits their preferences. As MSI puts it, "This dual launch empowers gamers with the freedom to choose between AMD and Intel platforms, tailoring their experience to their preferences."
While MSI hasn't revealed the pricing or release date for these new handhelds yet, they will be playable throughout the Computex 2025 event. The introduction of the AMD-powered Claw A8 BZ2EM marks MSI's commitment to providing diverse options in the handheld market. The previous MSI Claw 8 AI+ used Intel's Core Ultra processors.

The new Claw A8 also features an Xbox-style controller layout with Hall Effect joysticks and triggers to prevent stick drift. Furthermore, users can enjoy up to 24 GB of RAM.
However, the success of these handhelds will depend on how well Windows 11 is optimized for gaming on such devices. As noted in an MSI Claw 8 AI+ review, Windows 11 might still face optimization challenges compared to Valve's SteamOS. A refreshed MSI Center software, accessible via Xbox Game Bar, aims to enhance user experience and customization within Windows 11.
The launch of these new MSI Claw handhelds raises intriguing questions about the future of the handheld gaming market. What will Valve and other competitors unveil in response? Could running demanding titles like Doom: The Dark Ages at high settings on the go becoming a reality?
