MultiVersus Officially Shuts Down: Last Chance for Offline Play

The arena is closing. Today marks the official shutdown of MultiVersus, the free-to-play platform fighter featuring characters from Warner Bros. franchises. If you want to continue playing offline, you have only a few hours left to log in and create a local save.

After a promising beta launch in 2022, MultiVersus struggled to maintain player engagement, leading Warner Bros. to announce its delisting and server shutdown. This decision, coupled with the company's refusal to offer refunds for Founder's Packs, drew considerable criticism from the community.

MultiVersus launched with a diverse roster of fighters, including characters like Gizmo from Gremlins, Marvin the Martian, and heroes from DC Comics and Cartoon Network. The game's unique crossover appeal initially drew a large player base, reaching 20 million players at its peak. However, its failure to offer unique aspects in the live-service segment eventually led to a decline.

The game's shutdown arrives after a challenging period for Warner Bros. Games. Recently, Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, failed to resonate with consumers, leading to disappointing financial results. In response, Warner Bros. has canceled its Wonder Woman game and closed several internal teams.

However, there's a silver lining for dedicated players. If you've logged in between February 4th and today's closure, you can still enjoy MultiVersus offline: once you log in before 5pm BST/9am PT today, a local save file will be automatically created, allowing you to access your earned and purchased content in offline mode.

"All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game," the companies stated. "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

The closure of MultiVersus highlights the difficulties in maintaining a successful live-service game, especially in a competitive market. While its online features are now gone, at least players who logged in recently will be able to continue battling offline.
