Mysterious Light Streak Across US Skies: Chinese Rocket Fuel Dump or Aurora?

A wave of speculation swept across the United States recently when a mysterious beam of light was spotted in the night sky. The ethereal glow, visible across several states, sparked a flurry of theories ranging from space weather phenomena to, inevitably, extraterrestrial activity. However, the true culprit appears to be far more terrestrial: a Chinese rocket. The event highlights the increasing frequency with which space activities are becoming visible – and sometimes mistaken for something more otherworldly – in our night skies.

Initially observed on May 16th, the mysterious white streak quickly gained attention. Some initially suspected STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), a rare atmospheric phenomenon that can accompany the northern lights. But as more information emerged, and photos flooded social media, astronomers and space enthusiasts began piecing together the puzzle.

Reports from spaceweather.com and astronomer Jonathan McDowell pointed to a Chinese Zhuque-2E rocket launch. The rocket, launched by Landscape from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, carried six satellites into orbit. The key to the luminous streak lies in a post-launch maneuver: a “fuel dump” from the rocket’s upper stage.

“The aurora was rippling low on the northern horizon when suddenly a bright streak of light, reminiscent of a rocket re-entry, appeared high in the sky and flowed down to the horizon,” photographer Mike Lewinski told Spaceweather.com, capturing the event in a stunning time-lapse from Crestone, Colorado.

McDowell clarified that this fuel dump, occurring at an altitude of approximately 155 miles (250 kilometers), released fuel that then froze into tiny crystals. These crystals, reflecting sunlight, created the mesmerizing white streak visible across a wide geographical area, including Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington, and New Mexico.

This incident isn't unique. SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets have previously produced similar, albeit often swirling, displays when dumping fuel before reentry. These so-called “SpaceX spirals” have captivated and occasionally confused observers worldwide. The difference with the Zhuque-2E’s display, according to Live Science, lies in the type of fuel used. The Zhuque-2E utilizes a liquid oxygen and liquid methane hybrid fuel, known as “methalox,” which is becoming increasingly popular due to its cleaner burning properties and potential for in-situ resource utilization on other planets like Mars.

Astronomer Tony Phillips noted on spaceweather.com that the plume “was not an aurora, and it was not STEVE. We believe it is related to a rocket launch in China.” The incident underscores the importance of distinguishing between natural atmospheric phenomena and the increasingly visible effects of human space activities.

The Zhuque-2E itself represents a significant milestone in rocket technology. As a methane-fueled rocket, it offers advantages in terms of storage and cleaner burning compared to traditional kerosene-based fuels. China has now successfully launched four methane-powered rockets into space, demonstrating its growing capabilities in this field.

The sight of a mysterious light streak across the sky serves as a reminder of humanity's growing footprint in space. Whether it's fuel dumps creating dazzling displays or satellite constellations altering the night sky, our activities are increasingly impacting the celestial canvas above.
