NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope Embarks on Groundbreaking Mission to Map the Entire Sky in 3D

In a monumental leap for astrophysics, NASA's Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) space telescope has officially begun its two-year mission to map the entire sky in 102 infrared wavelengths. Launched in March, SPHEREx aims to revolutionize our understanding of galaxy formation, cosmic inflation, and the origins of water and organic molecules in planetary systems. This ambitious project promises to unlock secrets of the early universe and potentially reveal new insights into the building blocks of life.

First Light and Calibration: A Triumph of Engineering

Following its launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket alongside NASA’s PUNCH mission, SPHEREx achieved its “first light” on March 27, confirming that its instruments were performing as designed. After weeks of meticulous calibration and checkouts, the telescope commenced its science operations on May 1. Jamie Bock, SPHEREx principal investigator at Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), expressed his excitement, stating, "The performance of the instrument is as good as we hoped. That means we’re going to be able to do all the amazing science we planned on and perhaps even get some unexpected discoveries."

Mapping the Cosmos in Unprecedented Detail

SPHEREx's mission is to conduct a comprehensive survey of the entire sky, capturing about 3,600 images daily. The telescope orbits Earth from north to south, passing over the poles, imaging a circular strip of the sky each day. As the Earth orbits the Sun, SPHEREx’s field of view shifts, ensuring a complete, all-encompassing view of the universe every six months, ultimately generating four comprehensive sky maps.

Unlocking the Secrets of Cosmic Inflation and the Origins of Life

One of SPHEREx's primary goals is to study the universe's expansion in the moments following the Big Bang. By mapping the positions of hundreds of millions of galaxies in 3D, astronomers hope to find clues about cosmic inflation, an event that caused the universe to expand rapidly in its earliest moments. The telescope will use a technique called spectroscopy to determine the distance to faraway galaxies, information that can be used to turn a 2D map of those galaxies into a 3D one.

Furthermore, SPHEREx will search for water and other key ingredients for life in interstellar clouds within the Milky Way. The mission will make over 9 million observations of these clouds, mapping materials across the galaxy, helping scientists understand how different conditions influenced the chemistry that produced many of the compounds found on Earth.

Advanced Technology and International Collaboration

SPHEREx boasts cutting-edge technology, including six detectors, each with a linear variable filter allowing the capture of 102 different wavelengths of light. The mission also relies on the Near Space Network, which upgraded one of its ground stations in Antarctica through its Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program via a partnership with Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT). This upgrade allows for the efficient transmission of the approximately 20 gigabytes of data SPHEREx collects each day.

Implications and Future Prospects

SPHEREx's data will be publicly available at the NASA-IPAC Infrared Science Archive. Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, stated, "This new observatory is adding to the suite of space-based astrophysics survey missions leading up to the launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Together with these other missions, SPHEREx will play a key role in answering the big questions about the universe we tackle at NASA every day."
