Nintendo Switch 2 Backward Compatibility: Which Games Will Work? (Updated)

The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost here! Set to launch next week, on June 5th, one of the most anticipated features is its backward compatibility with original Switch games. But which of your favorite titles will make the jump?

Nintendo recently updated its database of Switch games tested on the new console, revealing that while the vast majority work seamlessly, some require updates, and a few unfortunately won't be compatible. Let's dive into the details.

As of Tuesday's update, over 15,000 games have been confirmed to run without issues on the Switch 2. However, unverified games might need updates or may never function correctly on the new system.

Here's a breakdown of the compatibility:

Games/Apps NOT compatible with Switch 2:

  • Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit
  • Niconico
  • ABEMA
  • Hulu
  • Crunchyroll
  • InkyPen

The reason for the incompatibility of the Nintendo Labo VR Kit is simple: as Nintendo states, the Switch 2 is too large to fit into the Toy-Con VR Goggles.

Games with start-up issues (under investigation):

This is a substantial list, including titles like: Final Fantasy, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, Warframe, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and even YouTube. Nintendo is actively investigating these issues, and many developers are expected to release patches before or around the Switch 2 launch.

Games with in-game compatibility issues:

Titles like Alan Wake Remastered, Alien: Isolation, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat have been identified as having some in-game issues. However, some of these are set to be updated and should work better on the Switch 2, including Doom Eternal and Pizza Tower.

Games requiring original Joy-Cons:

To play certain games like Ring Fit Adventure, 1-2-Switch, Everybody 1-2-Switch!, Game Builder Garage, Nintendo Switch Sports, and WarioWare: Move It! on the Switch 2, you'll need to connect an original Switch Joy-Con to the new console.

Despite the backward compatibility concerns, Nintendo's stock (NTDOF) has seen a positive bump, with shares up 4.19% on Tuesday. This suggests that investors remain confident in the Switch 2's potential.

Most of the original Switch library will be playable on the Switch 2, it's essential to check the compatibility lists to know which games might require updates or the use of original Joy-Cons.
