Nintendo Switch 2: First Look at Mario Kart World Cartridge and New Game Cases
The anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2 is reaching fever pitch, and Nintendo is strategically releasing small snippets of information to keep fans engaged. Recently, via their 'Nintendo Today' social media app, they've provided a glimpse at the official carrying case and, more excitingly, the first real-life Mario Kart World game cartridge. But are these reveals as groundbreaking as we hoped?
While the digital mockup shown at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct indicated the new cartridges would be the "same shape as Nintendo Switch game cards" but red and with "much faster data reading speeds," the reality is strikingly…familiar.

OatmealDome, a prominent Nintendo leaker, captured a video showcasing the carrying case, which reveals the red Mario Kart World cartridge. As they noted, "Switch 2 cartridges seem to be the same size as Switch 1 cartridges, to no one's surprise." This likely means backwards compatibility with original Switch games, a crucial consideration given the extensive Switch library.
The carrying case itself appears to have space for the console with Joy-Con 2 controllers attached, six cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps. This provides a practical solution for gamers on the go while maintaining the integrity of the new console.

However, not all news is positive. Reports suggest that the Nintendo Switch 2 game cases are undergoing a design change. Instead of the transparent cases of the original Switch, the Switch 2 cases will be solid red. This may impact collectors who appreciated the double-sided artwork visible through the clear cases. According to Genki_JPN, the inside might even lack artwork entirely, a significant departure from the original Switch's design. While this could help differentiate Switch 2 games on store shelves, it also dashes hopes about double sided artwork.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is equipped with upgrades such as the ability to play graphically-demanding games and a larger screen. The new Joy-Cons have been redesigned, and have also been replaced with magnets rather than sliding. The console is set to release on June 5, 2025.

Will this design impact sales? It is currently unknown. A lack of pre-orders for the console may indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2 may not be able to be bought even after its release on June 5, 2025.
Despite these tweaks, Nintendo President has stated that physical games are still a part of the business. This may reassure Nintendo enthusiasts.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launch, while slowly unfolding, is creating a blend of excitement and slight disappointment. The familiar cartridge design offers reassurance of backwards compatibility, whereas the new game case potentially is a mixed bag. What are your thoughts on the new Nintendo Switch 2 news?
