Nintendo Switch 2’s GameChat Feature: Phone Number Requirement and Accessibility Features Spark Debate

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, but not all the news is being received with open arms. While the new console promises innovative features like GameChat, a new requirement is raising eyebrows: users will need to register a phone number to access the feature.

According to Nintendo's official GameChat page, "Mobile phone number registration required to use GameChat." This is being implemented as an "additional security measure," requiring text message verification to set up GameChat. For younger players, the phone number must be registered to a parent or guardian's account.

The GameChat feature, accessible via the new 'C' button on the console, will allow players to communicate with friends and family during gameplay through a built-in microphone and optional camera for video chat. It will be available for free until March 31, 2026, after which a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership will be required.

The phone number requirement has already drawn comparisons to Blizzard's controversial decision to require phone numbers for Overwatch 2, sparking criticism. Concerns are being raised about potential privacy implications and the necessity of this measure, especially given that GameChat is limited to friend lists and the Switch already has a block function.

Adding to the intrigue, the GameChat feature will also support live subtitles and text-to-speech, enhancing accessibility for players. This feature emerged partly from Nintendo's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, as developers sought better ways to collaborate remotely.

According to console producer Kouichi Kawamoto, screen-sharing limitations during video conferences led to the idea of letting players share their gameplay screens, creating the feeling of playing together in the same room. This inspired the addition of GameChat, now augmented with accessibility options like live transcription. While USB keyboards should also be natively supported for text input.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release in just under two weeks, on June 5th. Notably, Nintendo will not be providing pre-release reviews, with the company citing day-one patch issues. A recent report also suggests that Nintendo may have the ability to brick modified consoles.

Ultimately, the phone number requirement for GameChat raises questions about security, privacy, and accessibility. Will this new feature be a welcome addition to the gaming experience, or will the restrictions hinder its adoption?
