Nintendo’s Switch Legacy: Redefining Gaming and Paving the Way for Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch has undeniably reshaped the gaming landscape since its launch in 2017. Its versatility, allowing seamless transition between handheld and docked modes, has captivated a diverse audience. But beyond its hybrid nature, the Switch era has also revolutionized how we collect, trade, and manage our beloved Pokémon. As the gaming world anticipates the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its potential integration with titles like Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it's worth examining the legacy this console leaves behind.

The Switch boasts impressive sales figures, exceeding 130 million units globally as of late 2023, even surpassing the Wii's peak. This success is attributed to Nintendo's evolving gaming ecosystem, comprised of over 2,000 titles and innovative services. Nintendo Switch Online +, their subscription service, enhances social and competitive play by offering access to classic titles along with cloud save features and additional multiplayer options.

Nintendo Switch's Impact on Gaming

One of the more subtle, yet profound, aspects of the Switch era is its impact on the Pokémon franchise. While previous generations required tedious processes to transfer Pokémon between games, the Switch introduced a more cohesive digital system. Games like Pokémon: Let's Go capitalized on the success of Pokémon Go, linking mobile and console experiences. The cloud storage service, Pokémon Home, allows players to store and move their Pokémon between compatible games, building a collection that keeps them invested in the franchise. This contrasts with earlier titles such as Pokémon Emerald(GBA) or Ultra sun (3DS) that are still being played.

Nintendo's innovative approach extends beyond gaming itself. As stated by Stim, a French-based corporate advisory firm, Nintendo has succeeded in the "self-destructive" innovation that companies fear most, by setting the purpose of innovation to "give real pleasure to fans." This philosophy is evident in the Switch's design. Instead of focusing on pure processing power like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo chose a new path to entertain fans.

Nintendo's Legacy

The anticipation surrounding the Switch 2 underscores the foundations laid by its predecessor. The Switch 2 release date is reported to be around the 5th of next month and its official price in Japan is 49,980 yen (about 480,000 won) before launch. Furthermore, Nintendo has balanced hardware and software development with the flat cross shaped physical button that is now a universal trend.

Will the Switch 2 continue its predecessor's legacy? Will we see NSO bringing back classic games? The future of Nintendo and its consoles are definitely something to look out for.
