No Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC? Larian Studios Says Development is “Boring”

Baldur's Gate 3 captivated gamers and critics alike in 2023, becoming a global phenomenon and earning numerous accolades, including GameSpot's Game of the Year. The game's immense success naturally led many to anticipate downloadable content (DLC) that would expand upon its rich world and engaging gameplay. However, developer Larian Studios has revealed a surprising reason why DLC isn't in the cards: they find making it "boring."

In a candid interview with GameSpot, Larian CEO Swen Vincke explained the studio's stance on DLC. "The honest answer is we try to be in the DLC business," says Vincke. "We've talked about that with BG3, but it's just... it's no passion. Happy player, happy business. But you also need to have happy developer for a happy player. What we're doing now makes developers way more happy."

Vincke pointed to the substantial patches and updates that Baldur's Gate 3 has received as the studio's preferred method of supporting their games. He elaborated that the team wants to focus on projects they find passionate, and DLC development simply doesn't spark that passion. He also added, "You want a happy player and happy business, but you also need to have a happy developer. What we're doing now makes developers way more happy."

The decision, while potentially disappointing for some fans, reflects Larian's commitment to fostering a positive and creatively fulfilling environment for their developers. Vincke recounted a realization the studio had after the game's massive launch: "We got a huge game, huge hit. Like, oh, we got to make DLC this, and DLC that, and DLC there, and DLC there. The money's going to pile up. We just nodded and said, 'Yeah, we'll make DLCs.' Then, the moment that we had some time to think, we realised... 'What are you doing?' So sometimes, progressive insight is not a bad thing. Sometimes you go down the wrong path and then you say 'Oh, f**k it'."

This change in direction may not mean a complete abandonment of post-launch content. Larian provided significant additions to the game, including an epilogue camp that provided closure for companions and reacted to player choices. However, Patch 8 has been confirmed as the final major patch, signaling a clear shift towards new, as-yet-unannounced projects.

The success of Baldur's Gate 3 has undoubtedly opened new doors for Larian Studios. While DLC for the game remains off the table, the studio’s focus on developer satisfaction and fresh creative endeavors promises even more exciting and innovative games in the future.
