Nvidia Shield TV Gets a Refresh: 120fps Gaming and Bug Fixes Arrive in Latest Update

Nvidia is showing its commitment to the Shield TV with the release of the Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.1. This new update brings much-needed bug fixes and performance enhancements to the popular streaming device, now celebrating nearly a decade of support. It's a testament to Nvidia's dedication, especially when compared to the shorter support cycles of some competitors.

For users who've experienced issues with Dolby Vision content stuttering, Plex playback, or remote connection problems, this update arrives as a welcome relief. Many of the fixes were previously tested via opt-in hotfixes, ensuring a smoother transition to the stable release for all Shield TV owners.

The update includes:

  • Fixes for stuttering Dolby Vision content when frame match is enabled.
  • Resolution of Plex playback issues when using AAC 5.1 audio.
  • Fixes for connection issues with third-party remotes after sleep or reboot.
  • Restoration of HQS / Maxrate option for USB audio.
  • Fixes night mode being skipped when DAP is ON.

But the biggest news? Gamers rejoice! The 9.2.1 update unlocks the ability to stream games on Nvidia GeForce NOW at 120FPS, albeit limited to 1080p resolution. This requires a GeForce NOW Ultimate membership and a compatible TV or monitor. This enhancement brings a noticeable improvement in responsiveness for supported games.

While the Shield TV continues to receive software support, many users are wondering if a new hardware revision is in the works. With the original device sharing underlying hardware with the Nintendo Switch, speculation is growing that Nvidia might leverage its relationship with Nintendo for a next-gen Shield TV. Nvidia hasn't commented on future hardware plans, but the continuous updates suggest the company sees value in the platform.

One Reddit user reported a clicking noise issue when streaming movies on certain apps like Apple TV and Max, indicating that some challenges still remain. Whether Nvidia addresses this in a future update remains to be seen.

The Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.1 is rolling out now to all Shield and Shield Pro units. Keep an eye out for the update notification on your device.
