One UI 8 to Bolster Security with Private Album & Enhanced Secure Folder

Samsung users, brace yourselves for a security-focused upgrade! One UI 8 is on the horizon, promising a suite of enhancements to protect your private data. Leaks suggest that the new iteration of Samsung's custom Android skin will introduce a Private Album feature and a revamped Secure Folder, addressing key security concerns and offering users more control over their sensitive information.

A Private Album in the Gallery App

According to X user @DalgleishGX, One UI 8's Gallery app might feature a "Private Album." This feature will allow users to store photos and videos privately within the Gallery app, offering a streamlined alternative to the Secure Folder.

Unlike Secure Folder, which duplicates the Gallery app and consumes more storage, the Private Album offers a more efficient way to safeguard content. If implemented using Android's Private Space API (introduced in Android 15), this feature could provide robust security.

Secure Folder: Addressing Security Flaws

The current implementation of Samsung's Secure Folder, while marketed as a secure haven for private data, has faced scrutiny due to a vulnerability. As reported previously, the Secure Folder leverages Android's Work Profile, which can inadvertently expose apps and media stored within to other apps running on the same device. This loophole means “maximum security” data can be shared far and wide, potentially leaking private information.

The good news? One UI 8 might finally address this critical flaw. Leaked information indicates that Samsung is planning to replace the Work Profile dependence with Android's Private Space API for Secure Folder. This change should prevent hidden apps within the Secure Folder from sending notifications or leaking stored media, enhancing the overall security posture.

As DevOfIpos on X noted, when the Secure Folder is hidden, apps within won't work or send notifications. This might introduce a degree of inconvenience when accessing secured content but the added security would be a worthwhile trade-off.

What's the Hold-Up?

While excitement builds for One UI 8, the delayed rollout of One UI 7 has tempered expectations. As Android Authority has pointed out, the slow pace of updates leaves users hesitant to anticipate a quick launch of One UI 8.

Looking Ahead

One UI 8's potential enhancements to the Private Album and Secure Folder represent a significant step toward strengthening user privacy on Samsung devices. By adopting Android's Private Space API and introducing a more integrated Private Album feature, Samsung aims to provide a more secure and user-friendly experience. However, the lingering concerns about update rollout timelines remain. Will Samsung deliver on its promise of enhanced security in a timely manner?
