Perplexity AI Joins WhatsApp: A New Era of AI Chatbots in Your Pocket?

Perplexity AI, the popular AI-powered answer engine, is now available directly within WhatsApp, joining the ranks of Meta AI and ChatGPT. This integration offers users a convenient way to access AI capabilities without switching apps, but raises questions about data privacy and the best AI chatbot for your needs.

Users can now add Perplexity AI as a contact in WhatsApp by saving the phone number +1 (833) 436-3285. Once added, you can start chatting with the AI to answer questions, conduct research, summarize content, and even generate images.

Aravind Srinivas, Co-founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, announced the WhatsApp integration on X, teasing “answers, sources, image generation” and hinting at more features to come. He also showcased the image generation capability by asking Perplexity what he would look like bald, and the AI delivered a convincing (and humorous) result.

ChatGPT has also been available on WhatsApp for some time, accessible by adding the number +1 (800) 242-8478. This gives users a choice between different AI models within the same messaging app. Meta AI is integrated directly into WhatsApp, accessible via a permanent button, but this placement has been criticized by some users who find it intrusive.

However, the convenience of using Perplexity AI within WhatsApp might come with a trade-off. Srinivas recently stated that Perplexity is developing a browser, Comet, that aims to collect extensive user data for targeted advertising. This raises concerns about data privacy, especially when using Perplexity for personal queries. Some experts suggest opting for dedicated mobile or web apps for AI chatbots like ChatGPT, where you might have more control over your data.

One potential benefit of using AI chatbots within WhatsApp is accessibility. In some emerging markets, WhatsApp traffic may not count towards users' monthly data allowances, providing affordable access to AI tools. Furthermore, the convenience of staying within the WhatsApp ecosystem is undeniable, eliminating the need to switch between multiple apps.

Ultimately, the choice of whether to use Perplexity AI, ChatGPT, or Meta AI within WhatsApp depends on your individual priorities. Consider your data privacy concerns, the features you need, and the overall user experience when making your decision.
