Pokémon Card Mania: Belfast Sees ‘All Time High’ Demand, Collectors Queue from Dawn

Pokémon card fever is gripping Belfast! Die-hard fans are lining up before sunrise to snag the latest releases, driving demand to an "all time high". The frenzy highlights the enduring appeal – and the increasing investment potential – of these collectible cards.

According to a recent report, enthusiasts began queueing as early as 7 AM to get their hands on the newest "Scarlet and Violet - Destined Rivals" set at Tigeroo Toys in Belfast's city center. Some waited over three hours, a testament to the cards' current popularity which sees rare editions fetching seriously high prices online.

Raymond Kilpatrick, owner of Tigeroo Toys, stated he implemented an allocation system: “The demand for Pokémon right now is as high as it’s ever been... We just get whatever Pokémon sends us. We’ve had to introduce a limit of ten packets per customer. All the boxes are gone within minutes.” This scarcity only fuels the fire.

Each packet retails for £4.30, but can contain rare cards valued up to £1,000, making the gamble enticing. Kilpatrick adds that Pokémon will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year by re-releasing limited edition cards from original sets, appealing to collectors spanning from primary school kids to seasoned adults.

“People are buying and keeping them because of their value and using them as investments. But many have been collecting for years, it’s been part of their childhood.” This blend of nostalgia and investment prospects is a powerful driver.

The dedication is remarkable. One customer regularly travels from Dublin to Belfast, ensuring he gets his share. He explained, “He told me that he has had no luck getting cards in Dublin as staff there were buying them before stores opened. But here, he knows if he shows up early and waits, he’ll get them. That’s real dedication.”
