Porsche Teases Street-Legal 963 Hypercar: A Nod to the Legendary 917?
Porsche is hinting at something big, and it has the automotive world buzzing. Could a street-legal version of the fearsome 963 hypercar, currently dominating the FIA WEC and IMSA endurance sports car series, be on its way? Porsche dropped a major hint, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Count Rossi's one-off street-legal 917, and asking the tantalizing question: "What if?"

The original 917, especially the 917K, secured Porsche's first overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970. Fast forward to 1975, Count Martine heir Teofilo Guiscardo Rossi di Montelera, commissioned Porsche to build him a street-legal version of the race car. Porsche obliged, creating a unique machine that turned heads wherever it went.
The 917 Strassenversion: A Legend Reborn?
To make chassis 030 roadworthy, Porsche's engineers added mufflers, fender mirrors, turn signals, and a horn to the low-slung beast. They even reupholstered the seats with luxurious tan leather from Hermès and added a suede headliner. Imagine seeing that barreling down the Autobahn!

Porsche has flirted with street-legal versions of its Le Mans racers before. The 919 Street Concept, a 1,000-horsepower follow-up to the 918 Hybrid, was deemed too hardcore for public roads. But the lure of a road-going hypercar is strong, and the teaser suggests Porsche might finally be ready to unleash a Le Mans-bred beast on the unsuspecting public.
The company released a brief video celebrating the 50th anniversary, near the end of the video, Porsche asks the question, "What if?" The simple question is followed by a clip of a modern racing steering wheel, along with a silhouette of what looks to be a Porsche 963 prototype car. We can only assume the brand has built a street-legal version of the modern race car.
What to Expect from a Street-Legal 963
While details are scarce, expect the street-legal 963 to stay true to its racing pedigree, possibly even retaining the massive rear wing and "shark fin" aerodynamics. Knowing Porsche, it will be incredibly fast, likely setting track records and costing a fortune. Anticipation is building!
According to the teaser, more information is expected to be revealed in June, around the time of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
