Rare Fireball Meteor Lights Up Skies Across Multiple States, Captured by Doorbell Cam!
A spectacular celestial event captivated observers across multiple states late Wednesday night, as a brilliant fireball meteor streaked through the sky. The phenomenon was widely reported, with sightings spanning from Colorado to Texas. One lucky resident of Hastings, Nebraska, even managed to capture the mesmerizing moment on their doorbell camera!
Kim Shelton of Hastings, Nebraska, unknowingly became a witness to this rare occurrence when her doorbell camera recorded the meteor at 3:46 a.m. The footage, shared on the Local4 weather app, shows the meteor blazing across the eastern sky.
Bradley Peterson, Hastings College Observatory Program Director, explained that the meteor entered Earth's atmosphere and began burning up, resulting in the visible fireball. He noted that these singular meteors are often referred to as "fireballs."
The American Meteor Society (AMS) reported that the event was also witnessed in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. The society tracks these events, and this particular meteor stood out due to its widespread visibility.
Coincidentally, the sighting occurred during the Eta Aquariids meteor shower, which typically peaks in early May and remains visible till the end of the month. Peterson suggested that the fireball might have been related to this year's shower. This meteor was observed in Missouri and as far south as Texas late Wednesday night, May 21, 2025. Numerous witnesses reported seeing the meteor and many also shared videos.
While meteors are regularly seen in our skies, such brilliant and widely observed fireballs are relatively rare. To see such a beautiful, fast moving object is something many people never get to see.
