Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: The Ultra-Thin Phone That’s Dividing Opinions
Samsung is making waves with its latest smartphone innovation, the Galaxy S25 Edge. Measuring a mere 5.8mm, it's the thinnest smartphone in years, a bold move that pits it directly against rivals like the S25 Ultra, OnePlus 13, and Poco F7 Ultra. But is thinness enough to win over consumers?
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge boasts a stunningly slim design, weighing just one gram more than the standard S25 despite its larger 6.7-inch display. It even packs a powerful 200MP sensor in the main camera, a feature previously reserved for the Ultra models.
However, this pursuit of thinness comes with compromises. The battery capacity is reduced to 3,900mAh, and charging remains at 25W wired and 15W wireless. A telephoto camera is absent, relying on the 200MP sensor for zoom. And, unsurprisingly, the Edge commands a premium price.
Samsung insists the S25 Edge wasn't inspired by rumors of an ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air. According to Kadesh Beckford, a Samsung smartphone product specialist, the company had been working on the Edge long before Apple's plans surfaced. "I’ve known about the Edge since the Galaxy Z Flip 5 launch week [August 2023]," Beckford stated.
The motivation, according to Samsung, stems from market research indicating a demand for Galaxy S25 Ultra features in a less bulky form factor. Hence, the 200MP camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, and titanium frame.
Early reviews highlight the incredibly lightweight feel and the impressive camera performance. One reviewer at CNET noted, "Holding anything else already feels outdated. While typing and scrolling on the feather-light device, I often found myself muttering 'this is crazy' as I gently tossed it in my palm."
But the battery life remains a concern. The 3,900 mAh battery is significantly smaller than the 5,000 mAh found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. While users report it lasts a full day with moderate use, expect to reach for the charger by evening.
So, how does the Galaxy S25 Edge stack up against the competition? The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra offers a larger display, bigger battery, and more versatile camera system for a similar price.
Ultimately, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is a phone that prioritizes aesthetics and portability above all else. Its ultra-thin design is undoubtedly eye-catching and feels fantastic in hand.
