Samsung’s One UI 7: The First Setting You Need to Change for a Better Experience

Samsung's One UI 7 is here, but there's one default setting that might leave you scratching your head: the notification display on the lock screen. If you’re used to easily spotting new notifications, the change could be jarring. Let's dive into why this setting is different and how you can fix it for a smoother, more informative experience.

The issue stems from a subtle but significant alteration in how One UI 7 presents notification indicators. Previously, icons were prominently displayed below the clock in the center of the lock screen.

Now, in One UI 7, these icons have been relegated to the top right corner, made smaller and less conspicuous. This change, coupled with the default setting that hides further notification details, can make it seem like you're not receiving any alerts at all.

Thankfully, Samsung offers customization options to revert to a more user-friendly notification display. Here’s how to change it:

1. Navigate to Settings.

2. Select Notifications.

3. Choose Lock Screen Notifications.

Here, you'll find three options: Dot, Icons, and Cards. The default setting is Icons, which places the small icons in the top right corner. To restore the more informative display, select Cards.

This moves the notification icons back under the clock and displays cards with detailed information when you light up the screen. These cards can even be expanded for more details and offer interactive options.

Beyond the notification settings, many users customize other aspects of One UI to better suit their needs. This includes setting the always-on display to a schedule, changing the default browser, keyboard, ringtone, and notification sound.

Customizing the home screen grid and app drawer, enabling Wi-Fi Calling, and switching to swipe gestures for navigation are also common tweaks.

One UI 7 is currently available on devices like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, S24 Ultra (after the update), S25 Ultra, S25 Plus, and Galaxy A56. If you own one of these phones or are waiting for the update on an older model, these customization tips will enhance your experience.

The Samsung Galaxy A55, for example, has already received the One UI 7update in Europe. This update, which requires a download of around 3GB, brings not only the features of One UI 7 but also the May 2025 Android security patch.

While waiting for stable release of One UI 8, expected in July or August alongside with Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, you should keep in mind, that One UI 8 beta may start as early as the end of May 2025, starting with Galaxy S25 series. If you want to try the One UI 8 Beta, make sure your device is eligible and back up your phone before joining.
