Sea of Stars: Free ‘Throes of the Watchmaker’ DLC Arrives This May, Expanding Retro RPG Adventure
Get ready to dive back into the enchanting world of Sea of Stars! Sabotage Studios has finally announced the release date for the highly anticipated free DLC, 'Throes of the Watchmaker,' landing on May 20th. This expansion promises a meaty addition to the already acclaimed retro-inspired RPG, offering around eight hours of brand new content.
Since its initial tease in early 2024, fans have been eagerly awaiting news. This free DLC introduces exciting new characters, intricate puzzles, stunning new worlds and a cinematic ambition equivalent to the complete game. Prepare for a beefy adventure that builds on the foundation of an already fantastic title.
In 'Throes of the Watchmaker,' Solstice Warriors Valere and Zale venture into the miniature clockwork world of Horloge and grapple with the cursed carnival that threatens it. It's designed as a standalone gameplay loop, ideally tackled after completing the main game's quest. Expect the same captivating turn-based battles, breathtaking pixel art, and a host of incredible original tracks. The base game's composer Eric W. Brown returns, joined by guest composer Yasunori Mitsuda (of Chrono Trigger fame!).
New Content Highlights Include:
- New Playable Classes for Valere and Zale: Adapting to Horloge's unique rules, the Solstice Warriors will unlock new magic. Zale becomes a Juggler, and Valere dazzles as an Acrobat, each with new attacks, damage types, skills and combos.
- New Playable Character: Artificer: The friendly robot Artificer joins the party with laser-shooting capabilities.
- New Areas, Music, Dungeons, Enemies, Bosses, and Puzzles: Explore the magical miniature clockwork world of Horloge and its cursed carnival, filled with unique environments, NPCs, enemies and dungeons.
If playing with pals is your kind of thing, the three-player couch co-op option, introduced in the 'Dawn of Equinox' update, is back. All of this for the grand sum of £0? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal.
Sea of Stars gained instant classic status as soon as it launched, achieving a new high-water mark for modern retro-styled indies. Hopefully, Throes of the Watchmaker sustains the good times when it lands soon.
Notably, the recently released introductory cutscene has deepened the connections between Sea of Stars and Sabotage Studio's earlier game, The Messenger, which raises a lot of questions.
This free DLC comes after 'Dawn of Equinox,' a separate free update that introduced local cooperative play, battle refinements, and more depth to the core Sea of Stars campaign.
