Sega Teases Virtua Fighter 6? VF Direct Presentation Sparks Hype for Series Revival
Sega is whipping up a storm of excitement in the fighting game community! After years of silence, the company has announced a Virtua Fighter Direct presentation, scheduled for Sunday, May 11, during the final day of Evo Japan. This news has fans buzzing with anticipation, wondering if the long-awaited reveal of Virtua Fighter 6 is finally on the horizon.

The announcement, initially teased and then quickly pulled from social media, promises to “reveal new developments in the Virtua Fighter series.” While the premature deletion caused some confusion, Sega has since confirmed that the VF Direct is still happening. The mystery surrounding the presentation has only amplified the hype, leaving fans speculating about what Sega has in store. Could it be a full-fledged sequel? Or perhaps another port of Virtua Fighter 5, optimized for the latest generation of consoles?
Adding fuel to the fire, earlier this morning, Sega announced that Wolf Hawkfield will be one of the confirmed characters to appear in the most recent Virtua Fighter project. Sega also revealed that a newcomer by the name of Stella will be joining him, as well as Akira, who was shown in the most recent gameplay trailer.

The original Virtua Fighter revolutionized the fighting game scene in 1993 as the first commercially successful 3D fighter. Its grounded, skill-based gameplay influenced iconic franchises like Tekken and Dead or Alive. Sega's last major entry, Virtua Fighter 5 (2006), has seen updated versions released over the years. A tech demo showcased during The Game Awards 2024 hinted at a new artistic direction for the series, showcasing the distinct visual changes to Akira and the game overall.
One of the character reveals, Virtua Fighter Wolf Hawkfield got a beastly makeover for Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s upcoming reboot. The new savage appearance of the wrestler character, with his sharp nose and tribal paint, neck beard and unkempt red hair, caused a boom of positive reactions to fans of the series.
Sega also released a Virtua Fighter Tech Demo that provided a look at the game, showing Akira dealing damage against Stella. At the same time, Sega also confirmed that choreography featured during the tech demo won't be part of the gameplay.
The VF Direct stream happening on May 11th will shine a light on what Sega has in store for the future of Virtua Fighter. Don't miss out, it might be the first look at a sequel of this acclaimed fighting game franchise.
