SpaceX’s Starbase Transforms Into Official City, Seeks ‘Spaceport Mixologist’ Amidst Mars Ambitions
SpaceX's Starbase facility in Texas is rapidly evolving, not just as a hub for rocket development, but also as a full-fledged city. Recently incorporated as Starbase City by Cameron County, the facility is now advertising a unique set of job openings, signaling a move towards building its own hospitality sector. This includes positions like barista, pastry chef, and even a 'Spaceport Mixologist', tasked with creating hand-crafted cocktails for the workforce.
According to the job listing, the Spaceport Mixologist will be responsible for ensuring a friendly and welcoming service environment, enhancing the productivity and morale of the SpaceX team. This detail emphasizes the company's commitment to creating a comfortable and supportive atmosphere for its employees at this remote and vital location.
Starbase has grown from a small testing site to the core of Elon Musk's Mars ambitions. The facility already boasts launch pads, rocket-building infrastructure, and even a Tiki Bar built using rocket flaps for its awning. This evolution into a city solidifies Starbase's importance to SpaceX's future plans. The incorporation process, approved by local residents (largely SpaceX employees), has not been without some opposition.
This news arrives as SpaceX prepares for the ninth major flight test of its massive Starship rocket. While previous tests have ended in explosions, Musk remains optimistic that Starship can reach Mars. He anticipates the first Starship departure for Mars by the end of next year, potentially carrying Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus. If successful, initial human landings could begin as early as 2029.
Meanwhile, SpaceX has obtained FAA permission to conduct up to 25 Starship launches annually from Starbase. The latest launch attempt is scheduled for Tuesday evening.
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen how this new “city” will develop, balancing the needs of its aerospace workforce with the norms of municipal governance. Will Starbase City become a model for future off-world settlements?
