Spotify Revamps User Experience: More Control Over Music Discovery and Playlists
Spotify is rolling out a series of updates aimed at giving users more control over their listening experience. These changes touch upon various aspects of the app, from playlist curation to recommendation management, offering both Premium subscribers and free users greater agency in shaping their musical journey. The update reflects Spotify's effort to balance algorithmic recommendations with user preferences, putting the power back in the hands of the listener.
For Premium users, the most notable change is the revamp of the Queue feature. The new design offers easier access to essential controls like Shuffle, Smart Shuffle, Repeat, and Sleep Timer. Furthermore, subscribers will now see Spotify's recommended tracks after their queued-up songs, allowing them to curate their listening experience more effectively. The option to disable Autoplay and Smart Shuffle entirely is also available in the settings, perfect for those who prefer sticking to their own playlists.
"Discovering music should feel effortless and fun," Spotify stated in a press release, emphasizing their commitment to providing seamless discovery and intuitive playlist curation. This sentiment is echoed in the introduction of a refreshed Hide button and the upcoming 30-day Snooze feature. The Hide button now removes a track from a playlist across all devices, while the Snooze feature, currently being tested with Premium users, temporarily removes a song from recommendations for 30 days, offering listeners a break from overplayed favorites. Emma Roth, a news writer covering the streaming wars described the Snooze Button as a new functionality for user to temporary remove tracks from their recommendations
On the mobile front, Spotify is streamlining playlist management with the addition of Add, Edit, and Sort buttons at the top of each playlist. These tools simplify the process of adding tracks, changing playlist titles and cover art, and organizing song sequences. Listeners in select countries, including the U.S., UK, Canada and Australia, can even transform their Liked Songs into playlists by filtering by genre and selecting the "turn into a playlist" option.
Access to music-curation tools has also been simplified. By tapping the Create button at the bottom-right of the mobile app, users can easily create playlists, collaborate with friends, and join a Blend. Premium subscribers can also use the Create button to start a Jam session for real-time listening with multiple contributors, or access the AI Playlist feature, which expands Spotify's offering to new markets.
The Your Library tab has been relocated to the third option at the bottom of the mobile app, maintaining accessibility while making room for the new features. These updates solidify Spotify's position as a leading platform for personalized music discovery and management.
All of these changes reflect Spotify's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and provide more control over music discovery. With features like the Snooze button and revamped Queue, Spotify is empowering listeners to shape their musical journey in exciting new ways.
