Spotify’s AI DJ Gets Chatty: Now Taking Voice Requests for Personalized Playlists
Spotify is leveling up its AI DJ feature, adding a much-requested functionality: voice commands. Premium subscribers can now verbally dictate the vibe, genre, or artist they want to hear, making the AI DJ less of a passive experience and more of an interactive music companion.
For over a year, Spotify's AI DJ has curated personalized playlists based on your listening habits, similar users' tastes, and deep musical knowledge. But until now, it was a one-way street. You listened to what it served up, hoping for the best blend of familiar favorites and exciting discoveries.

How it Works: To access the new voice command feature, simply open the AI DJ (search for “DJ” in the app) and press and hold the 'DJ' button located in the bottom right corner. Wait for the beep, then speak your request. You can ask for specific artists, genres, moods, or even quirky prompts like "play me some music to soundtrack my life as a movie." If you just want a different feel, tap the button quickly to change the playlist without dictating the specific music.
Jess Weatherbed from TechRadar reports that this update empowers users with more control, allowing them to steer the AI DJ’s selections instead of passively accepting its choices. TechCrunch notes the feature is initially available in English across 60 markets for Premium subscribers.
The Human Touch Behind the AI: While AI powers the content surfacing, Spotify emphasizes the human element in the DJ's commentary and insights. Molly Holder, Spotify's senior director of product for personalization, explains that a "writer's room" of music experts and editors collaborates with generative AI to craft the personalized introductions and anecdotes that make the experience feel more engaging.
According to Holder, this commentary boosts listener engagement, benefiting artists by exposing listeners to tracks they might otherwise skip. This strategic use of AI across Spotify's product portfolio aims to enhance the value proposition for its users.
Early tests show some mixed results. While specific requests like "early 2000s patriotic country" deliver predictable hits, broader requests might require some refinement. Some users have reported occasional bugs, like abrupt song stops and resets. However, the increased interactivity and personalization potential are undeniable.

This evolution of the AI DJ highlights Spotify's ongoing commitment to leveraging AI to enhance music discovery and create a more personalized listening experience. By adding voice command capabilities, Spotify is giving users more say in their musical journey.
