Trump’s Tariffs Trigger Tech Exodus: 8BitDo and Hyte Halt US Shipments
The escalating trade war and the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are wreaking havoc on the tech industry, forcing companies to make tough choices. Two prominent names, 8BitDo, known for their retro gaming accessories, and Hyte, a PC case manufacturer, are the latest to announce a halt to some or all shipments to the United States.
8BitDo Suspends Shipments
Gamers in the US are facing limited availability of 8BitDo products. The company confirmed on its website that it's temporarily pausing shipments from its China warehouse due to the ongoing tariff saga. "Due to U.S. tariffs, only products from our U.S. warehouse are available for shipping to the United States. China warehouse shipping is temporarily paused," the message states.

This decision appears to be a direct result of the 145% tariffs imposed on imports from China, coupled with the end of "de minimis" exemptions for shipments under $800.
Hyte Follows Suit
Hyte, a sister brand of iBuyPower, is also feeling the pinch. Product Director Rob Teller revealed that the company is halting some product shipments to the US due to unsustainable import costs. "We are still bringing in all products that...have open preorders from customers," Teller said. "Everything else has been paused or being diverted to other regions," save for limited collaborations.
According to Gamers Nexus, Hyte is focusing on the EMEA region instead. Teller explained, "Currently, we are focusing on the EMEA region because we’re not bringing any product into the United States because of these tariffs."
While computers, phones, and PC cases were initially exempted from the full 145% tariff, other crucial PC components like fans, liquid coolers, and power supplies weren't spared. PC cases already faced a 20% tariff on Chinese imports, along with another 25% tariff on aluminum-derivative products. The impact on Hyte is significant; before the tariffs, its PC cases had a slim 5% profit margin. Any increase in tariffs could force the company to sell at a loss or raise prices.
The Broader Impact
This trend extends beyond 8BitDo and Hyte. The PCWorld reported and Gamers Nexus documentary shed light on how the trade war affects the computer and electronics industry. Companies big and small have been impacted.
What Does This Mean for Consumers?
The suspension of shipments raises concerns about product availability and pricing for US consumers. Americans may find it harder to purchase specific items and potentially face higher prices on available products. Experts recommend to buy the products from other channels like Amazon or Best Buy.
These recent developments underscore the significant impact of Trump's tariffs on the tech industry and consumers alike. Will this trend continue, and how will companies adapt to navigate these challenging times?
