Valve’s Swift Action: Fixes Starfield Beta Crash on Linux in Under a Day!
Bethesda's latest Beta update for Starfield brought a wave of bug fixes, Creation Kit upgrades, and even a new Very Low graphics setting. However, it also introduced an unexpected crash for Linux users. But fear not, Valve and its dedicated developers sprang into action, delivering a fix in less than 24 hours!
The issue, which caused Starfield Beta to crash on load on both Desktop Linux and Steam Deck, was quickly identified and addressed. Gamers reported encountering a frustrating error message upon startup.

The solution? Access the "bleeding-edge" Beta of Proton Experimental through Steam. By navigating to the Properties section of Proton Experimental in your Steam Library and selecting "bleeding-edge," players can bypass the crashing issue. Keep in mind, however, that this will apply the bleeding-edge Beta to all games using Proton Experimental.
While the Very Low graphics setting may offer slight improvements in some areas, initial tests reveal that performance in New Atlantis remains challenging, consistently dipping below 30FPS across various upscaling methods.
Despite mixed reactions to Starfield since its launch, Bethesda continues to demonstrate its commitment to improving the game. This update follows the release of the Shattered Space DLC, which aimed to expand upon the base game's content and address some of its shortcomings. The newest update brings dozens of fixes to Bethesda's troubled RPG.
Key improvements in this update include:
- Added Very Low display settings to improve performance on some devices.
- Creation Kit: Added the ability for Creators to add new icons to the game.
- Creations Store now supports bundling Creations.
- Creation Kit: Creations up to 2GB in size can now be uploaded.
- General crash and stability fixes.
Bethesda’s ongoing work on Starfield includes addressing various gameplay issues, graphics enhancements, and quest-related problems. For instance, the update fixes a Grav jumping issue, corrects status effect text, and resolves problems in several quests like "All That Money Can Buy" and "In Memoriam."

UI improvements are also part of the update, fixing issues in the Ship Builder and Vehicle Builder menus. Localization enhancements ensure that text is correctly displayed in multiple languages, providing a better player experience globally.
Valve's rapid response to the Linux crashing issue is a testament to their dedication to supporting the gaming community. Meanwhile, Bethesda's continuous improvements to Starfield highlight their commitment to refining and expanding the game's overall experience. While opinions on Starfield may vary, the collaborative efforts of both companies ensure a brighter future for the game.
