WhatsApp iPad App Teased After Years of Waiting: Is Meta Finally Delivering?

For years, iPad users have been clamoring for a dedicated WhatsApp app. Now, it seems their pleas might finally be answered. A recent, subtle hint from the official WhatsApp account on X (formerly Twitter) has ignited a flurry of excitement and speculation.

The WhatsApp account responded to a post advocating for an iPad app with a simple, yet suggestive, eyes emoji. While not a formal announcement, this reaction is widely interpreted as a strong indication that Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, is preparing to launch a native iPad version of the popular messaging app. This development follows nearly two years of beta testing through TestFlight.

Currently, iPad users are relegated to using WhatsApp through a web browser, requiring authentication from the mobile app. A dedicated app would offer a significantly improved user experience, taking full advantage of the iPad's screen size and features.

The potential release of a WhatsApp iPad app aligns with a broader trend within Meta. Reports suggest that an iPad version of Instagram is also in the works. Previously, Instagram CEO had stated that an iPad version wasn't a priority. The current workaround for Instagram on iPad involves using the iPhone app, which results in an unsatisfactory experience with black bars filling the screen.

While a beta version of the WhatsApp iPad app has been available through TestFlight for some time, access is limited and no significant updates have been released. The lack of public release despite the beta's existence has been a source of frustration for many users. Whether this recent tease signals an imminent launch remains to be seen.

The timing of this potential release will be interesting to observe. WWDC 2025 is fast approaching with many software announcements anticipated. Will this be the place where Meta officially announces the release of the WhatsApp iPad app?
