Windows 10 Sunset Looms: Microsoft Urges Users Toward Windows 11 and Copilot+ PCs for Enhanced Security
The clock is ticking for Windows 10 users as Microsoft intensifies its campaign to migrate them to Windows 11. With security updates ending on October 14, 2025, the tech giant is warning of growing cyber risks for those who remain on the older operating system. The solution? A free upgrade to Windows 11, or even better, a brand new Copilot+ PC.
While Windows 11 adoption is steadily increasing, millions of users may face a difficult choice. According to Statcounter, Windows 11 is closing the gap with Windows 10, reaching within 10% globally for the first time. Just a year ago, the gap was over 40%. However, roughly 53% of Windows users are still on Windows 10. The free upgrade path might not be available to everyone, leaving them with options each with their own drawbacks: paying for extended Windows 10 support, buying a new PC, or facing security risks by continuing to use an unsupported OS.

Microsoft's preferred answer seems clear: upgrade to a Copilot+ PC. The company is actively promoting these new PCs with AI-powered features like Recall, improved performance, and enhanced security as the best way forward. "Windows 11 commercial deployment has increased by nearly 75% since last year," CEO Satya Nadella recently noted, highlighting the growing demand for the latest operating system.
The push toward Windows 11 is also about more than just security; it's about keeping up with innovation. Staying on Windows 10 will eventually lock users out of the improvements and added functionality of Microsoft's new AI-capable products. For Microsoft, the endgame is to leave Windows 10 behind. The company is at this point basically urging you to abandon your Windows 10 machine altogether, and a recent blog post shamelessly promotes its new Copilot+ PCs.
One of the main benefits of upgrading is the new AI features such as Recall, which takes periodic screenshots of your screen, analyzes it using AI, then indexes it so you can search through all your past PC activity at a later time. Copilot+ PCs are purported to be up to five times faster than a five-year-old Windows device, with enhanced security features on top. However, you should still upgrade to Windows 11 for free if your PC meets the requirements.
With the end-of-support date looming, the choice is becoming increasingly clear. Will you upgrade to Windows 11 and embrace the future, or will you risk staying behind on an increasingly vulnerable operating system? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
