Xbox Series S: Microsoft’s Price Hikes Destroy the Budget Gaming Value?

Once hailed as the champion of budget-friendly gaming, the Xbox Series S is now facing criticism as Microsoft's recent price hikes threaten to undermine its value proposition. Was the Xbox Series S once an incredible deal, offering a current-generation console for around $300.

The Rise and Fall of an Affordable Console

The Xbox Series S quickly gained popularity, outselling its more powerful sibling, the Xbox Series X, thanks to its affordability. It was the go-to recommendation for gamers on a budget, allowing them to play the latest titles without breaking the bank, particularly when paired with a Game Pass subscription.

Price Hikes: A Deal Breaker?

However, Microsoft's decision to increase the price of the Xbox Series S to $380 for the 512GB model and $430 for the 1TB version has changed the narrative. Now, with taxes, getting a Series S alone will cost over $400. For that price, consumers expect better specs. The Series S, already an underpowered machine, struggles with increasingly demanding games. What was acceptable for $300 in 2020 is no longer a compelling offer five years later.

Game Pass No Longer a Savior

Adding to the problem is the rising cost of Game Pass. Previously, the Series S was seen as a "Game Pass Machine," justifying its value by providing access to first-party titles like Forza Horizon and Halo, as well as a vast library of other games. However, the value of Game Pass has also decreased due to Microsoft's tiered pricing, which restricts the library for those who do not pay the highest price. The $20 per month price of Game Pass Ultimate combined with the Series S's increased price tag makes it a less attractive deal.

The Competition

Priced at $400, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) becomes a more appealing option. Deals can be found where the PS5 costs only slightly more and offers significantly better performance. The PS5 Slim bundled with Astro Bot for just $402 on Walmart represents far better value than the Xbox Series S.

Xbox's Gamble: Testing Brand Loyalty?

Microsoft's decision to raise prices, especially for older consoles, is unprecedented. Usually, console prices decrease mid-lifecycle. By increasing prices, Microsoft is testing the limits of its brand loyalty and how much Game Pass can compensate.

Despite these challenges, Game Pass continues to play a crucial role, particularly for smaller titles. Games like "Blue Prince" and "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" debuted on Game Pass, found success and critical acclaim. For example, Xbox was the top platform for "Expedition 33", marking 45% of all the game's players flocking to its ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will adjust its strategy to revitalize the value of the Series S. Gamers now have to weigh their options carefully. With the new prices and the rising cost of Game Pass, the Series S risks losing its appeal as the go-to budget-friendly console.
