YouTube Turns 20 with Major Upgrades: Multiview Expands Beyond Sports, AI Music Features Debut

YouTube is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a slew of exciting new features across its platforms, promising a revamped viewing experience for users worldwide. From expanded multiview capabilities on YouTube TV to AI-powered music personalization, here’s a breakdown of what’s coming.

One of the biggest announcements is the expansion of multiview on YouTube TV. Initially limited to sports content like football games and March Madness basketball, multiview will now allow users to customize their viewing experience with non-sports channels. Imagine watching ESPN, The Weather Channel, 'Law & Order,' and 'Chopped' simultaneously – YouTube is making it a reality.

According to YouTube, this feature will start with "a small group of popular channels and expand in the coming months." This opens up exciting possibilities for binge-watching different genres and creating personalized viewing experiences.

But the upgrades don't stop there. The main YouTube platform is also receiving a number of enhancements. One notable addition is "Ask Music," an AI-powered tool enabling users to create a personalized radio station simply by describing their mood or the type of music they want to hear. This feature is currently available for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscribers.

YouTube Premium members are also getting a boost with the introduction of 4x playback speed, allowing for super-fast content consumption. For those who prefer viewing on their TVs, the YouTube TV app is undergoing a redesign to offer easier navigation, streamlined access to comments and channel information, and playback quality tweaks.

“Easier navigation, playback, quality tweaks, plus streamlined access to comments, channel info, and subscribing,” YouTube said about the TV app redesign.

YouTube is also acknowledging some hidden features, including long-pressing on the video player to watch in 2x speed and a sleep timer for bedtime viewing.

These upgrades signify YouTube's commitment to innovation and enhancing user engagement. From AI-powered music personalization to expanded multiview options, the platform is offering more ways than ever to consume and interact with content. The fact that over 20 million videos are uploaded daily highlights YouTube's continued dominance in the video streaming landscape.
